Is Breast Irradiation Routinely Necessary Following Conservation Therapy of Breast Cancer?
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION The gradual acceptance of Fisher’s “Alternative Hypothesis” of the biology of breast cancer, as confirmed by numerous prospective trials of the past twenty years, has served to support the validity of breast conservation therapy, Appropriate questions are being raised as to whether irradiation is always necessary, especially in view of current evidence that local recurrence of breast cancer does not appear to adversely affect survival rates. We need to investigate the costslbenefit of accepting a higher rate of local breast cancer occurrence in order to avoid the expense, morbidity, and inconvenience of adjuvant radiation therapy following conservation surgery. Is there a subset of women with a specific group of tumors in whom the omission of radiation would be acceptable? There is no clear answer at present, but the following essays by Drs. Pierce, Lichter, and Nemoto strive to summarize the available data and add clarity to the issue. Eric R. Frykberg, M.D., F.A.C.S. Section Editor

Comparison of two radiation techniques in breast boost delivery
Introduction: In the treatment of breast cancer, breast conserving surgery (BCS) and whole breast irradiation is a usual technique. The influence of lumpectomy boost following breast radiotherapy is apparent, but there are different delivery methods. This work intended to compare the dosimetric parameters of electron beams and photon beams for boosting irradiation in breast can...
متن کاملDosimetric Comparison of 3D Tangential Radiotherapy of Post-Lumpectomy Breast at Two Different Energies
Introduction: Radiation therapy following breast conserving surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in any radiation oncology department. A tangential parallel-opposed pair is almost always the technique of choice for this purpose. This technique is often performed based on 3D treatment planning. The aim of this study was to compare 3D treatment planning for two different energie...

Conservative Breast Surgery Stage I and Stage II breast cancers are early cancers that are not fixed to the skin or muscle. If lymph nodes are involved, they are not fixed to each other or to underlying structures. Modified radical mastectomy continues to be appropriate for some patients, but breast conservation therapy is now regarded as the optimal treatment for most. Six prospective randomiz...
متن کاملYounger Patients, None-early Diagnostic Stage of Breast Cancer, and Low Breast Conservation Surgery, a Message in the Review of 102 Cases from South Iran
Background: Breast cancer is an important cause of cancer death among women all over the world. Even in places with low incidence there are reports of an increase in the number of breast cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to report the demographic aspects of breast cancer among patients referred by surgeons for adjuvant therapy in a private cancer clinic during the past five year...
متن کاملDose-volume Analysis of Heart and Lung during 3D planning of Tangential Breast Cancer Irradiation
Background: Breast cancer is becoming more frequently diagnosed at early stages with improved long term outcomes. Radiation-related heart disease and lung cancer can occur following radiotherapy for breast cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate some dosimetric parameters of heart and lung during whole breast radiotherapy. Methods:Twenty five consecutive...
